Stars to take their hacks at Burroughs
Stars to take their hacks at Burroughs
The Burroughs High baseball team doesn't mind giving up its field to another team — as long as it's for charity.
The Indians' home field will be the site of a fundraising softball game March 17. The "Stars vs. Staff" event will pit a team of celebrities against a squad of Burroughs teachers and coaches.
Doors open at 10 a.m. and the game is scheduled to begin at 11. There is a $5 suggested donation. All proceeds will benefit the Burroughs baseball and softball programs.
The master of ceremonies will be television news personality Fritz Coleman.
The celebrity team might have a ringer in producer/director Garry Marshall. Marshall is a veteran softball player who has competed for decades. He has played in senior leagues over the years in Burbank.
He will be joined on the team by Penny Marshall, who has enjoyed success as a producer, director and actor, as well as actors Hector Elizondo, Joe Mantegna, Olivia Hussey, Alan Thicke and Bernie Kopel.
Also expected to take part is musician David Eisley, a Burroughs graduate.
Other participants are Jason Dolley, Brad Isaacs, Marcelo Tubert, Carmen Argenziano and Nadine Stenovitch.
There will also be drawings for prizes.
Youth athletes ready to hit the track today
Some of the finest youth track and field athletes from the area will be in action today in the Burbank's Finest Middle Schools Track Meet.
The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Burroughs High's Memorial Field.
All three middle schools — John Muir, Luther Burbank and David Star Jordan — will participate. Muir is the host this year.
The high-jump competition will begin at 8:30 and running events will start at 9.
