Peter Musurlian, who serves as the station manager and senior producer of BTV6, Burbank's government access channel, was honored Friday night by the Burbank Chapter of the Armenian National Committee for his leadership and support of the Armenian community.

Vicky Marashlian chaired the event that also honored Burbank Police Chief Tom Hoefel and adventurist Garo Hovassapian, who recently climbed to the summit of Mt. Ararat. Staged at the La Bella Banquet Hall, the evening served as an opportunity for the Burbank Armenian National Committee to honor their supporters, review the work they have done over the past year and lay out their agenda for the future.

Musurlian, one of the most recognizable faces in our community due largely to his role as the affable host of the award-winning program "Burbank Magazine," provided two years of leadership as the chairmanship of the Burbank committee before passing on the gavel to Arbi Ohanian in 2006.

For his service, Musurlian was presented with the organization's Vahan Cardashian Award that is given in honor of the man who established the American Committee for an Independent Armenia, the predecessor of the ANC.

While it is BTV6 that has given Musurlian his celebrity status in Burbank, residents may be surprised to know of his multi-faceted life that reaches far beyond the editing rooms of Channel 6.

Musurlian, the grandson of Armenian genocide survivors, graduated from USC and then continued his education earning multiple master's degrees from Baylor University, American University and the University of Redlands.

Working as a producer, reporter and anchor at various stations throughout the United States during the 1980s, Musurlian returned to California in the early 1990s to serve as district director for then-Congressman Carlos Moorhead.

An Army Reservist, 1992 saw Musurlian awarded the U.S. Army's Humanitarian Service Medal for his public-affairs-related work in Homestead, Fla., following Hurricane Andrew.

In the late 1990s, Musurlian served as an Army journalist in Hungary, Croatia and Bosnia.

His reports from the region, seen on the American Forces Network throughout the world, earned him the NATO Medal and a Medal of Commendation from the U.S. Army.

Over the years, Musurlian's work with BTV6 has been recognized with more than 40 industry awards. In 2003, he and his wife, Szilvia, co-founded Globalist Films, an independent production company that has so far produced five documentaries.

The Musurlians' greatest production, however, was unveiled on Dec. 5, 2004, with the birth of their daughter June Petra.

Among those on hand to recognize Musurlian and the evening's other honorees were local committee members Mourad Topalian, Narineh and Yerado Abrahamian, Areen Ibranossian, Tamar Krekorian, Emma Kurdian, Shant Minas, Nayiri Nashabedian, Zareh Sinanyan and Garen Yeghpairian.

Others who enjoyed the evening of music and Armenian dance performed by the Lilian Dance Studio, under the direction of Lillian Margaryan, were Assemblyman Paul Krekorian, Burbank City Councilwoman Anja Reinke, Rich Roche of AT&T, Lori Partamian, the Very Rev. Fr. Dajad Dz. V. Yardemian, Rev. Khoren Habeshian and the ANC's executive director, Aram Hamparian, who served as the evening's keynote speaker.

Committee members working on the event were Vartan Deirdeirian, Talin Djabourian, Silva Kechichian, Arek Kevorkian, Zepur Kirejian, Tamar Krekorian, Arpi Mansourian, Souzy Ohanian, Vahe Shahinian, Zareh Sinanian, Silva Tashdjian and Sevana Zetlian.
