FAMILY FAITH:
An homage to deep laughter

Laughter. It is one of life’s greatest gifts. We can be in the midst of a crisis in our life and all of a sudden it will come upon us — a beautiful gift created by God to relieve tension.
The other night I was tucking my girls into bed, and my eldest daughter was telling us about a program they have at her school. It is called “Fifth Grade Buddy.” Each fifth-grader in her school is assigned to a kindergartner and they meet up for different holidays — Halloween parade, Thanksgiving Stone Soup, etc. My daughter speaks highly of her “buddy” and is gentle and kind in her communication to him. She was telling us how cute he is and how much she enjoys interacting with him.
Her younger sister lay on her bed trying to picture which kindergartner her older sister was speaking of. To get a better description of him, she asked her older sister, “Hey, is his front tooth missing?” My older daughter replied, “I don’t remember.”
Her younger sister persistently drilled her on not noticing if her little buddy had a tooth missing saying, “How can you not know if his tooth is missing?”
Exasperated, my oldest daughter finally responded, “I don’t know. I don’t keep dental records on the little guy.” My younger daughter responded, “Well you should!”
We all crumbled into a fit of giggles for several minutes, commenting on their two remarks. I looked at their precious faces and realized how priceless laughter is and what great senses of humor my two girls exhibit. This is a blessing to me as a mom.
Laughter can even come amid the stressful times. I remember an instance when my eldest, at the age of 3, put glue all over her 1-year-old sister’s legs and then salted them!
Later that same day, the two of them took powdered Crystal Light and wetted it to make finger paints, which they then used to decorate their large, white closet door. Not at all fun for me to clean up. These were stressful moments at the time, but I did laugh — how could I not! They were 1 and 3 years old, and it was creative for them, albeit messy for me.
In the Old Testament, even Sarah laughed in momentary disbelief. In Genesis 21 she had joy when God said she would have a son at an old age. God has a sense of humor! And Sarah caught on to it. Her laughter also came from the joy she felt about becoming a mother.
Today is the Saturday of a holiday weekend. Are you thankful? Are you laughing with your family?
Whether you cozy up with a mug of coffee or cocoa and enjoy a card game, or snuggle up to a comedy, don’t forget the gift of laughter. Laughter brings health to our hearts, our bones and our emotional, mental and physical states.
Find the time to smile and laugh. Look for joy where it can be found. We are not promised tomorrow. How do you want to be remembered? I hope my family remembers me with a smile on my face and the sound of my giggles.
