SPORTS NOTEBOOK:
Civitan event is tradition
Baseball players get chance to show off their skills: It is as much of a summer tradition in Burbank as cookouts and dips in the pool.
The Burbank Civitan Club Baseball Jamboree has become a part of summer for athletes in the Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services Hap Minor leagues.
The 52nd installment of the celebration will take place July 12t at Olive Park.
Sixty-one teams from the league will take part in the event that begins with a parade at 9 a.m. that will wind its way to the park.
The players will then gather for the traditional skills competition, where athletes will try and earn trophies in events like baserunning, hitting for distance and throwing for accuracy.
In addition, hot dogs and punch will be prepared and served to the young ball players by members of the Burbank and Foothill Civitan Clubs.
On July 19, players from the city’s Ponytail Softball leagues will gather for their end-of-the-year event, enjoying the same festivities as their baseball counterparts.
Tubert does well in golf event: Burroughs High girls’ golfer Emily Tubert has kept busy this summer playing in a variety of tournaments across the nation.
Thursday, she ended her play in the ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior Tournament tied for second-place with Allison Lee of Valencia.
On the par-72 course, Tubert shot rounds of 75, 74 and 71 for a total of 220, as she had to battle her way back in the event.
Lee carded rounds of 72, 74 and 74 for a 220.
Veronica Valerio of Temecula placed first, firing rounds of 73, 72 and 72 for a 217.
The ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior is a 54-hole stroke-play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Assn. at Mission Hills Country Club-Dinah Shore Tournament Course.
The tournament field consisted of 57 boys and 20 girls 12-18 from five states, including 70 from California. The girls’ division played the par-72 course at 6,141 yards while the boys’ division played at 7,036 yards.
The longest consecutive running AJGA event at the same venue, the ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior boasts past champions such as Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Bob May, Kevin Na, Danielle Ammaccapane, Brandi Burton, Emilee Klein, Kellee Booth and Grace Park.
Those professionals all played in — and won — the ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior before making names for themselves at the amateur, collegiate and professional levels.
CIF finds new home for state track and field event: Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of Buchanan High in Clovis will serve as the home for the CIF-California Track and Field Championships for the next three years (2009-2011).
The Fresno/Clovis area is no stranger to hosting CIF state championship events. This will not be the first time the CIF-California Track and Field Championships have been held in this community, as it was contested in the region in 1915 (Fresno); 1931, 1940, 1947 (Visalia) and 1935 (Ratliffe Stadium in Fresno).
In addition, Fresno’s Woodward Park has been the site for the CIF-California Cross-Country Championships since the event’s inception in 1987, and the 1987 state wrestling championships took place at Selland Arena in Fresno.
The selection of Veterans Memorial Stadium marks the first time the state track and field championships will be held at a high school site since 1973 when the event took place at Woodland High and only the second time since 1947 that a high school venue has been used.
The venue features a Mondo Super X Track, installed in spring 2007, as well as colored relay zones, hurdles marked on track and staggered starting lines.
