The Burbank Magnolia Park Optimist Club Scholarship Committee presented 10 deserving students with $1,000 scholarships at a dinner meeting May 21. It was very rewarding to hear each student talk about themselves and their dreams for the future.

The committee selecting the recipients were co- chairmen Roland and Vonda Neundorf, and members Sandy Brooks, Peggy McDonald, Evie Magnante, Sue Kyle and Doreen Wydra.

Brooks made the presentations to two scholars from Bellarmine-Jefferson High School. Itria Licitra is planning to attend UC Berkeley, majoring in anthropology and mathematics. Rachel Romanowski plans to attend UC Santa Barbara and major in psychology and fine arts.

Alexia Townsend of Providence High School also received a scholarship. She will attend New York University and major in television and film.

McDonald made the presentations to Burbank High School students.

Aderonke Aderonmu will attend UC Berkeley and major in public health. Benjamin Taylor will attend UC Berkeley and major in history with a minor in drama. Nare Torosyan will attend UCLA and major in neuroscience with a possible minor in music. When she was a fifth-grader, she won the Optimist Club’s girls’ Oratorical Contest. Gina Park will attend UC Berkeley and major in engineering.

Roland Neundorf had the honor of presenting the students from John Burroughs High School. Brandon Barello will attend Stanford in the fall and major in international relations and biotechnology. Shelley Klawitter will attend UC Davis and major in mathematics. Jessica Tsay will attend UCLA with a major in biological sciences.

The students are all quite accomplished and expect a lot of themselves. I am sure they will all reach their goals.

The Burbank Magnolia Park Optimist club meets at 6 p.m. the first and third Thursday of the month at the Burbank Elks Lodge, 2232 N. Hollywood Way, Burbank. For more information, contact Jesse Fox at (818) 845-5255 or visit optimisticfox@aol.com.
