Rivals put on epic battle at Mt. SAC

Published: Last Updated Tuesday, October 27, 2009 9:30 PM PDT
BURBANK — It was a battle of not only division rivals, but of Pacific League rivals and even city rivals in the Division I boys’ race at Saturday’s Mount San Antonio College Invitational.

On the hilly course at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Burroughs High senior Greg Dotson and Burroughs sophomore Anthony Monroy put on a battle fitting of cross-town rivals.

Monroy won the race in 15 minutes 26 seconds, and Dotson was second in 15:45.

However, although the Indians took the top individual placement, it was the Bulldogs who captured the team competition, winning by the slimmest of margins, 111-112.

Helping Burbank run to victory were Anthony Moumjian (18th; 16:13), Kevin Coronel (21st; 16:14), Jeremy Labertew (28th; 16:24) and Aaron Chen (45th; 16:51).

The Burroughs finishers included David Campos (eighth; 16:05), Alex Martinez (32nd; 16:30), Charlie Camacho (37th; 16:35), Alex Quispe (38th; 16:35), Ariel Larios (43rd; 16:54) and Kamal Chahal (48th; 16:54).

In the girls’ race, the Indians placed second in their division, led by a fourth-place effort from Monique Martinez (19:18). She was followed by Kristy Payne (14th; 20:04), Angie Martinez (18th; 20:37), Lauren Andrade (48th; 21:48), Celina Rodriguez (63rd; 22:24) and Annabelle Maginnis (71st; 22:44).

The fastest time by a local female on the day was turned in by Burbank’s McKenzie Paul (19:07).

The Burbank freshmen boys, led by individual winner Sergio Fraire (16:43), won their race and the Burroughs sophomore boys finished second behind Ryan Johnson (seventh; 17:10).
