FOOTBALL PREVIEW:
INSIDE INFO

Published: Last Updated Saturday, October 3, 2009 12:05 AM PDT
BELL-JEFF VS. CREAN LUTHERAN SOUTH

WHEN: 7 p.m. today.

WHERE: Memorial Field (Burroughs High).

RECORDS: The Guards are 2-2; the Saints are 0-2.

LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff lost to Frazier Mountain, 52-14; Crean Lutheran South lost to San Diego Jewish Academy, 67-0.

OUTLOOK: The Guards come into the nonleague game with two of their top players injured. Both players were hurt in last week’s loss to Frazier Mountain. Junior starting quarterback Philip Diaz suffered a concussion on a late hit and had to be helped off the field. “A concussion usually takes at least a week to get over,” Bell-Jeff Coach Rolando Aguirre said. “But his doctor said he could be out two to three weeks.” Diaz has led the Bell-Jeff offense, completing 53 of 108 passes for 915 yards and five touchdowns. Also going down with an injury last week was All-CIF Southern Section senior linebacker Alex Davidians, who rolled his ankle. Aguirre said Davidians — who also plays running back — didn’t practice all week and he is questionable for today’s contest. Davidians is the team’s leading tackler with 46. With the absence of his two star players, Aguirre said the Guards have changed around their offense and will be running some new plays. “Some people might be surprised at a few of the things that we’re going to do on offense,” Aguirre said. “I had no choice but to switch some things around.” Bell-Jeff will be taking on a Saints team that has not scored in two games, as they were outscored, 111-0. Crean Lutheran South, from Irvine, plays in the Academy League. It is the Saints’ first season as a varsity program. The Guards will play one more nonleague game — against Silver Valley on Oct. 10 — before opening Santa Fe League play Oct. 17 against St. Genevieve. Bell-Jeff comes into the contest ranked No. 8 in the CIF Southern Section Northeast Division.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: Bell-Jeff has scored 93 points and given up 93 points in its four nonleague games.
