In order to help ease the stress some students may face while applying to college, the counseling department at Central Union High School has been offering college application workshops to its seniors since October.
“I’ve completed about 3 1/2 applications,” said Roberto Ramirez, a 17-year-old senior. “The whole process was really easy for me because I got a lot of help. Everything was really detailed.”
Roberto said the opportunity to complete all of his applications at school was a big relief.
“I would just come in whenever I needed help and someone was always here to help me,” he said.
To ensure all 375 Central High seniors were able to get the help they needed, representatives from local educational organizations were on hand to offer advice.
“We just help them with the actual process and help them answer questions regarding where they should apply,” said Renee Palomera, an Early Academic Outreach Program representative. “We really try to answer any questions they have about applications or college in general.”
David Leal said he found all the information helpful given he had little knowledge about what the process would be like.
“I didn’t really know what to expect when I started all my applications,” said David, a 17-year-old senior. “They sat with me and walked me through each part and it helped a lot.”
While Saturday marks the application deadline for all of California’s state universities, Carolina Zaragoza said she is happy knowing she can return to the school’s career center to begin her private university applications.
“I’m thinking about applying to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix,” said Carolina, a 17-year-old senior. “I wouldn’t mind going out of state. I’m ready to be in a new place with different people.”
