My tenure here has been a whirlwind of change. Here's the latest: We will be launching the Sunday News-Press and Leader on Jan. 30.
In the last two years, we've done quite a bit. We started a blog, The818Now.com, we redesigned the paper, upgraded and modernized our website, and on and on and on.
Newspapers, and newspaper companies, can be very staid places. They can be institutions where things stay the same, changing and adapting only when forced. This is not one of those places.
As you may have guessed by the title, this is combined effort of the Glendale News-Press and Burbank Leader. The Sunday paper will contain an expanded opinion page, a larger Life & Leisure section, more photos, and a more comprehensive calendar section. The news and sports sections will remain strong, with more space being dedicated to in-depth, investigative and enterprise articles.
In addition, I am proud to announce that Ron Kaye, former editor of the Los Angeles Daily News, and current publisher of RonKayeLA.com, will be writing a front-page column. His first piece will coincide with the launch of the Sunday edition. Ron is an incredible journalist, highly regarded — and sometimes feared — for his incisive and deeply reported opinion pieces.
I will also be moving my column to the Sunday edition, and will be changing its frequency from weekly to biweekly. Except for Ron, all columnists will continue to be published on our Forum page.
The publication schedules of the papers will also be changing. Readers in Burbank will continue to get the Leader on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the same manner they always have. The Sunday News-Press & Leader will be delivered as part of a Los Angeles Times subscription, and will also be available free in news racks around town.
Readers in Glendale will continue to receive six newspapers each week, though the papers will be printed Tuesday through Sunday instead of the current Monday-to-Saturday schedule. On the days we are not publishing a print edition, news will continue to be posted online, both on the respective papers' websites as well as on The818Now.com.
Related to this, I also want to announce a couple of new additions to our staff: Katie Landan and Kelly Corrigan.
Katie Landan is our new Web editor, coming to us from FoxNews.com in New York City. Katie brings a wealth of knowledge regarding social networking and community blogging, and comes from a solid breaking-news background. She is being tasked with making our online presence more informative and nimble. Though she has been here but a week, she is already making a significant impact.
Kelly Corrigan, who has been with us a scant three days longer than Katie, is our new editorial assistant. Kelly is a graduate of the Missouri School of Journalism, and has done internships and freelance work for the Los Angeles Daily News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune and National Geographic Traveler magazine. Kelly will be covering breaking news on Sundays, writing education features and profiles, and helping to update our event calendars.
Kelly and Katie, joined by the rest of our award-winning staff, will be instrumental in making all editions of the papers — both print and online — be as good as they can possibly be. It will be an interesting ride, and one that I think will allow us to serve you all even better.
Let me know your thoughts.
Dan Evans is the editor. He can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
