Older adults looking to cool off this week can head to the Verdugo Pool Thursday for the first-ever "Rock-a-Hula" pool party.

Adults 55 years old and older may attend the free, city-sponsored event, featuring hula and water Zumba dancing, food and swimming, city officials said.

Councilman Bob Frutos came up with the idea for the event — the theme of which came from an Elvis Presley song — and he suggested it during a recent City Council meeting.

"I just love Elvis music. For a lot of our seniors, that's when they were youngsters, they can all get into the music for our water Zumba," Frutos said. "I think it's a fun way to kind of do something different, to stay active, rekindle old friendships that they haven't seen in a while, and just try to have a fun evening for our seniors."

Joe Finkle and the 7/10 Splits will perform, and organizers will serve a barbecue meal.

More than 220 older adults have registered to attend the event, which will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at 3201 W. Verdugo Ave.

"It seems that it's being well-received by the community," said Kristen Smith, recreation services manager.

City officials encouraged residents to RSVP, though attendees are welcome to show up at the door. To RSVP, visit http://www.burbankparks.com.
