High winds caused a gas station canopy to collapse Friday night at the Apple Market BP station at the corner of Highway 24 and State Route 801, near Staunton River High School.

National Weather Service reports show wind gusts were estimated at 50 to 70 mph Friday night through early Saturday morning which also caused a number of downed trees and powerlines.

First Alert meteorologists expect winds to decrease across the area late Saturday evening, turning light by Sunday morning.
