Just a little under three days of rest wasn’t enough to cool down the bats of the Burbank 10-11 All-Stars at Saturday afternoon’s opening round of the Division softball tournament.
Burbank scored the game’s first four runs and never looked back en route to a 9-2 victory over Section 4 champion Westchester Del Ray at Banning Pass Little League’s Lions Park.
“It was a nice win,” Burbank Manager Peter Orozco said. “We scored fast and built up a good lead.”
The victory vaults Burbank into Sunday’s winner’s bracket contest back in Banning at 6 p.m. versus either Los Angeles or Adelanto with an opportunity to advance into Tuesday’s championship game.
Aside from advancement, Burbank’s victory also continued a torrid pace for the Media City representatives, who slammed their way to a Section 2 championship thanks to outscoring Tehachapi, 35-2, in two contests.
The last victory, 18-0, took place Wednesday at Palmdale Little League.
Any idea of fatigue went out the window quickly, as Burbank tacked on two runs in the first and second innings in jumping out to a 4-0 lead.
Asia Morales drove in the game’s first two runs on a single, while Sidnie Dabbabbie also smacked in two runs.
Even though Westchester halved its deficit in the top of the third, Burbank added a run in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-2 lead.
The final blow to Westchester’s comeback attempt came in the fourth, when Burbank added four runs, three coming on a three-run home run from Memorie Munos, a member of the Burbank Ruthless like Orozco.
Burbank led, 9-2, after four and rolled to a victory by the same score.
Sammy Fiorella added two hits for Burbank, while starting pitcher Mia Garcia fanned six batters in three innings of work.
Dabbabbie came on in relief to close out the game, while both hurlers were handled by catcher Isabella Orozco, who was injured in the first inning on a swipe tag at the plate, but managed to stay in the game.
With the defeat, Westchester Del Rey drops into elimination bracket action Sunday at 3 p.m.
