  5. Obama has leverage to get his way on Guantanamo

President Barack Obama's renewed request to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, confirms what the detainees have already shown with their hunger strike: Permanent detention at the U.S. naval station isn't viable as a matter of practicality or...

  7. Letters: Debating Guantanamo

Re "Obama's Gitmo woes," Opinion, May 5 As a fan of Doyle McManus, I was disappointed to read his claim that most of the detainees being held at Guantanamo Bay were anti-American extremists when they were apprehended. Our own government has...

  9. The worst human rights violator in Cuba

For decades, American politicians have denounced human rights violations in Cuba. With good cause, they've accused the Castro brothers of rounding up political prisoners, torturing them, and detaining them for years with no charges filed and no access to a criminal trial.

  11. The Guantanamo dilemma

When he ran for president, Barack Obama laid out the case against the detention of inmates at Guantanamo Bay: "It is expensive. It is inefficient. It hurts us in terms of our international standing. It lessens cooperation with our allies on counterterrorism efforts. It is a recruitment tool for extremists. It needs to be closed."

  19. Today's Buzz: Should Obama close Gitmo?

President Obama said in a news conference this week that he was directing his staff to re-launch his effort to close the U.S. detention center for suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and would look for allies in Congress to help. The prison has been controversial, both at home and abroad, since it opened in 2002 under former President George W. Bush. Critics say its prisoners have been denied their legal and human rights and tortured. Gitmo supporters say transferring prisoners to U.S. facilities would allow lawyers to shield them from justice or interrogation. Obama called for closing Gitmo in his first order after taking office in 2009, but Congress blocked him from transferring any detainees to the United States. Should Obama renew his effort? Should Congress support it? Has Gitmo outlived its usefulness? Should the U.S. deal with suspected terrorists in U.S. courts? Talk about it!
