  1. Ashley Crothers Sheridan Elementary School fifth-grader

On March 26, all Sheridan Elementary third-graders went to the pool in Charlevoix, as part of their physical education, class to swim and learn about water safety. When they arrived, the girls and boys got ready in their own locker rooms and put on their swimsuits. Then they headed out and sat by the pool and listened to instructions from coach Al Gooch. After they listened, they went back in the locker room and took a shower in their bathing suit. They had three stations to go to. The first one was 'reach', where they had to reach and grab someone to help them out of the pool. The second one was P.F.D. (personal flotation device), where the kids had lifejackets on. They formed a circle and hooked arms, lifting their feet up and floated on their backs. The third station was boat safety. Here they learned that if your boat tips over and you see land, you don't swim to the land because you will lose energy, you need to get back onto the boat. If you try to swim to land, your body will become cold, and your fingers and body will become numb. When they were done with the stations coach Gooch talked more about safety. He said that you had to be no more than 8 feet away from the land to be safe in the water. Everyone learned that 3,500 people drown every year.
