  • Letter: Problem wasn't really the insulation

The Burbank Leader of Aug. 13 regarding the noxious odor in several offices and classrooms at Jordan Middle School only tells half the story. The issue at the school wasn’t “poorly drying wet attic insulation,” but it was attic insulation that had become contaminated due to a poorly written re-roofing specification. The chemical roof adhesive used during the re-roofing project had penetrated through the new roof membrane and into the attic space. In so doing, this chemical adhesive had become lodged in the attic insulation. Consequently, the trapped chemicals in the adhesive did not dissipate over time, but instead became trapped in the attic insulation. This same problem also occurred at other Burbank district campuses last summer, but not to the same degree. Jordan Middle School was the worst case.
