Movies can refer to motion pictures, the art form of making a film or the motion picture industry. Films are made by recording images of actors and scenery using cameras, animation techniques and special effects. In the late 1900s, computers became a key resource for making a movie. Films, featuring "movie stars," are distributed by movie studios, which are large production companies. Movie reviews, written by film critics, appear regularly via numerous media outlets and can have a major effect on the success of a film and how much money is made.  « Show less

  1. DVD review: 'Being John Malkovich' real, or a put-on?

For whatever reason, 1999 was the best year for American film in at least three decades. With competition like “The Matrix,” “South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut,” “The Sixth Sense” and “Toy Story 2,” it was hard to pick a No. 1. And yet I'll still stand by my choice of “Being John Malkovich” — a movie that managed to be vastly entertaining, funny, and moving, even while being indescribably far off all paths, beaten or unbeaten.

  11. Burb's Eye View: Sausage king has links to past and future

On San Fernando near the border of Glendale and Burbank, it looks as if someone flew in a sausage haus from Bavaria and dropped it smack between a bank and a blank beige wall. It wasn’t moved there, though walking into the Continental Gourmet...

  17. On Location: Oscar contender 'The Artist' gives shout-out to L.A.

As a front-runner to win top honors in the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony, “The Artist” is a rarity. Not only is it in black and white, almost entirely silent and a French director's take on old Hollywood, it is the only movie among the nine best picture nominees filmed entirely in Los Angeles.
