  1. Southern California Close-up: Westside of Los Angeles

You're an outsider heading to the Westside of Los Angeles — not the beach cities, but Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Westwood and the nearby well-heeled neighborhoods south of the Santa Monica Mountains. This means you'll be well-fed, well-rested and perhaps more closely watched by the issuers of your credit cards. And while the dollars fly, you may learn a little about wealth, fame, geography and Persian desserts.

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

  13. The Polo Lounge, back in fine form

Would you like anchovies? What about capers? How spicy do you like your steak tartare? The waiter at the Beverly Hills Hotel's Polo Lounge who asks for my guest's preferences is as solicitous as my grandmother's doctor asking after her health. The various ingredients are mixed tableside into the raw beef, with professional panache. Good, maybe not quite as spicy as intended, the tartare, served with the warm, toasted brioche seems like a swell way to start off an evening at the legendary Polo Lounge.

  15. Tower Bar: Glamour under the stars

ON a balmy summer night, where do you take out-of-town friends more intent on seeing something of the Hollywood scene than trying the latest, greatest restaurant? To the most adult place on the Strip: Tower Bar at the Sunset Tower hotel. We commandeer my friend John's rented convertible, lower the top, the four of us pile in. We cruise along Sunset Boulevard, taking in the glitzy boutiques, the packed sidewalk cafes, the stretch limos idling at the curbs, giggling at the goofy getups of teenagers swarming toward the Strip.
