  1. On the Town: Burroughs Bowl puts students center stage

From the Hollywood Bowl, the Greek Theater and the John Anson Ford Amphitheater to Burbank's own Starlight Bowl, Burbankers have no shortage when it comes to selecting a nearby venue for an evening of star-canopied music.

  3. Barbara Morrison: Songs from a survivor

While Barbara Morrison's 1973 arrival to the jazz and blues party was somewhat late, the singer has definitely lived it to the hilt. One of Los Angeles' top jazz vocalists, Morrison made her bones on the bandstand alongside the top names in music, performing with everyone from Johnny Otis to Ray Charles, Mel Torme and Dizzy Gillespie. But Morrison, who appears at Burbank's Joe's Great American Bar & Grill on May 26, remains an unassuming, modest and very down-to-earth character.

  7. The Blasters' frontman Phil Alvin takes to the stage New Year's Eve after a scary 2012

When Phil Alvin takes the stage for a New Year's Eve solo set at Joe's Great American Bar & Grill in Burbank, he won't just be welcoming in 2013. He'll be closing the book on a year he'd rather forget.

  9. Salsa swings as the main course

To the casual observer, Burbank may not look like a hotbed of salsa and swing dancing. But anyone looking a little more closely this summer would have discovered crowds filling the sidewalks of downtown Burbank every Thursday night, stepping out to the smooth stylings of renowned salsa, rock and swing ensembles.

  11. Ballet studio evolves while maintaining tradition of storytelling

Natasha Middleton's ballet studio and company are evolving in their second decade, but she said she stays true to her main philosophy — perpetuating the tradition of the Ballet Russe while training young dancers for the professional spotlight.

  13. Band will blow its own horns again

My brother and I were the best of friends when we were in elementary school in Burbank during the mid 1960s. But that changed after I started Muir Middle School and went on to Burbank High School in the '70s. We barely saw one another, even though the doors to our rooms were 12 feet apart.

  15. Catching up with Red Simpson, the Bard of Bakersfield

Bakersfield country singer-songwriter Red Simpson, 78, has enjoyed a long, distinguished career. A key architect of Bakersfield's crackling, regional musical style, he's had his songs recorded by the biggest names in the business — Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, Gram Parsons, Lucinda Williams, even Annette Funicello. Heck, Buck Owens alone cut more than 25 of them during his legendary mid-1960's peak.

  19. The angel of rock 'n' roll

When rock 'n' roll singer Jimmy Angel hits the stage at the Smoke House restaurant on Saturday, it will be just another stop along a decidedly tumultuous five-decade career path. Angel, who specializes in a mixture of retro-1950s big beat and fiery Memphis soul, has performed from the Tokyo Dome to Las Vegas showrooms to Manhattan's famed Copacabana — where he appeared no less than 39 times.

  21. Brooks, Bulldogs bite down

THOUSAND OAKS — The Burbank High softball team isn't very representative of a typical No. 3 league squad in the CIF Southern Section playoffs. The Bulldogs were in the hunt for the Pacific League championship until the final regular-season game and...

  23. It's time to discuss performance medals

This spring at Burbank elementary schools, principals awarded medals to students based on state test results from the prior year. My special needs son did not receive a medal and broke down into tears during his assembly. When my older son brought home...
