  1. Health insurance: Can it be made simple?

The success of the 2010 federal healthcare law depends in part on more uninsured Americans obtaining coverage. So it's crucial that when the uninsured try to sign up for policies, they don't get a bureaucratic runaround or wind up in phone-tree hell....

  13. Today's Buzz: Back off on entitlement reform?

The latest report from the trustees for Medicare and Social Security, released last week, had better news than expected. It predicted that Medicare’s trust fund would last another two years, until 2026, than trustee forecast last year. It predicted Social Security’s trust fund would last until 2033, matching last year’s prediction. Advocates for the program argued that the report showed only small changes would be needed to keep both paying benefits for decades to come. But those pushing for fundamental reforms in these entitlement programs – including a voucher-like system for Medicare and cuts in cost-of-living benefits for Social Security – argued that the report could be misunderstood; regular tax revenue already is being used to supplement payroll tax revenue for both programs, and the need will grow as more baby boomers retire, they said. Do you think fundamental changes are needed in either program? Should they be done right away, or put off a few years? Or should Congress make whatever changes are needed to preserve the programs in their current forms? Talk about it!

The release of the annual trustees reports for Social Security and Medicare has generated some of the most overheated hand-wringing about the health of these two crucial programs in recent years, largely because the economic slump has made them look weaker than they may be over the long term.
