9. It's how much, how heavy for Kylesa

Georgia band Kylesa is part of a bumper crop of psych-heavy, hipster-friendly hard rock bands from the South, all of whom rose to prominence — or something like it — in the past few years. Kylesa formed in Savannah in 2001 and burned through a slightly-greater-than-usual array of record labels and bandmates (frontman Phillip Cope and guitarist/vocalist Laura Pleasants are the only remaining original members) before hitting it big with the hook-filled sludge-fest "Spiral Shadow" in 2010.

  17. Second time's the charm

Leftovers — like whatever's in that green jar near the back of the third shelf — can be a dreaded fridge-horror specter past their prime as soon as they hit the Tupperware. But oh, those beautiful exceptions! Beef bourguignon, lamb stew, posole, chili — there are lots of soups, stews and slow-cooked braises that really do taste better after they've had a cooling stay in the fridge followed by reheating and second-day service.

  21. Hooked on trout

From my view knee deep in the river, real food looked like this: A swift current charged down Utah's Weber, and beyond the stream bright yellow alfalfa, and beyond that a reservoir holding sun-stunned water from the immense snowmelt two seasons ago. It was a blue-ribbon stream, three thousand brown trout per river mile. A teasing impression of plenty.
