1. Dining review: Grain Lab stands out from the chain crowd

Squeezed on all sides by chain shops and eateries in Burbank's Empire Center, Grain Lab is an independent island. The small eatery, which opened last month, has the minimal look of a hip chain, with a slightly industrial-meets-organic laboratory feel with brushed concrete floors and white walls.

  3. Dining review: Serving up Thai spices courtside

The inside of 40 Love Café feels like a food court, the outside just the tiniest bit like Wimbledon courtside.

  5. Dining review: Ramen that will do in a pinch

By the time I got to Orochon Ramen, my dinner mates were like grumpy bears. The table was cramped and they’d ordered drinks that never materialized. I was undaunted. Parking was easier than I thought it would be in Downtown Burbank, and I liked what they’d done with the place. Their clever use of inexpensive pine and paper turned a cavernous ex-Tony Roma’s into a sleek Japanese eatery. We switched to a more spacious table and as soon as the waitress arrived, reiterated our drink requests and cheerfully ordered our food.

  7. On the Town: Supporters eat soup, assist families in need

While this past week saw millions of Americans wishing, hoping and praying for those magical numbers that would result in their collecting a $656-million lottery prize, one of the more realistic and sustained wishes, hopes and prayers is that every family could have a safe and comfortable home, a prosperous and honorable livelihood, and the chance to build a better future.

  9. Dining Review: Vegetarian's paradise in Burbank

There are designers who specialize in making new buildings look old — fabricating that used and loved look before any actual customers arrive. Their tools include distressed wood, scratched steel and pre-aged Naugahyde, for an instant patina of decades.

  13. No frills but top-quality food fast

If you check out the new Moore's Delicatessen, at Third and Orange Grove in Burbank, in the space formerly occupied by Ben's Deli, don't plan to hang out long. You order at the counter, and they deliver your meal to your table. The day I was there, a group of four women in business attire ditched the place because they wanted full-table service. "I don't do self-serve," said one.

  15. Dining Out: A great find for yummy Thai food

If you are looking for a simple, nondescript, affordable place that has good Thai food, head over to Saraya Thai in Burbank. Look closely because it's tucked in the corner of a strip mall, far from the trendier parts of town, making it a nice respite away from noise and crowds.

  19. Easy dinner recipes: Gazpacho like light cream, plus 15 other quick ideas

Looking for a cool way to beat the heat? And you want flavor and color too? Oh, and you want it in under an hour. I have one word: gazpacho. This refreshing summer soup is typically made from a puree of garden-fresh tomatoes and vegetables, dried bread, a little oil for body and something bright -- vinegar, lemon juice -- to liven the flavors. Gazpacho is simple, and there are so many variations to try. May we offer some suggestions? You can find the related recipes below.

  23. A good meal can still be had during hurricane

In Florida, we share a history of bad dinner guests. You may not have had personal contact with Katrina, Ivan, Wilma, Charley, Frances and their buddies who blew through in recent years, but it's likely you know someone who did.
