9. 'Yes Is the Answer' asks the question: Who's afraid of prog rock?

"Yes Is the Answer" is a collection of 20 essays related to progressive rock and its somewhat less regularly derided cousin art rock. Fifteen of the writers care about the subject, or used to. The other five came along to kibitz — a chess term for the chatter of bystanders who provide unwanted commentary while the players sit and rack their brains. As with chess, progressive rock is commonly assumed by outsiders to be a sexless, all-male realm of wasted intellect. Many of the essayists in "Yes Is the Answer" operate under this belief. If you're a prog fan, opening the book can be like stumbling into Monty Python's Department of Abuse.

  13. A smarter way to deal with China

China will almost certainly pass the United States in the total size of its economy within a decade or so. But if one looks also at military and "soft power" resources, the U.S. is likely to remain more powerful than China for at least the next few decades. Does it matter?

Kim Kardashian was walking along a street in Beverly Hills when a gust of wind caught her full skirt, blowing it upward in a scene similar to Marilyn Monroe's famous skirt-billowing episode in "The Seven Year Itch." Kardashian was able to keep the skirt from revealing too much, though. [Los Angeles Times]

  23. 'Lives of the Pigeons' at Side Project ★★½

The cantankerous-geezers-in-the-park school of drama gains another intriguing entrant with Sherod Santos' "Lives of the Pigeons," now in a world premiere at Side Project under Adam Webster's direction. The DNA in Santos' work has far more in common with David Mamet's discursive "The Duck Variations" than Herb Gardner's cuddly "I'm Not Rappaport," and there are also echoes of Edward Albee's "The Zoo Story" and dashes of Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter.
