  1. Start the Presses: Reading too much into the weather

Last weekend, my wife Donna and I schlepped up and down our street, informing neighbors we didn't know that weather had forced us to postpone a party most weren't aware we were throwing. It was somewhat awkward.

  3. Start the Presses: Learning to crawl with the neighbors

Sprawled beneath the crawlspace under my house, desperately trying to coax my loveable but dense cat to come out, it hit me: I need to know my neighbors better.
Sprawled beneath the crawlspace under my house, desperately trying to coax my loveable but dense cat to come out, it hit me: I need to know my neighbors better. Two hours prior, my wife and I came home to a dark and cat-less house. We had been out...

  5. Pet of the week: Riley

Riley is an 18-month-old, handsome orange tabby with a quiet personality and a loving nature. He is a former foster kitten who was returned to the Kitten Foster Program when his owners found themselves unable to continue to care for him. Riley’s favorite pastimes are sleeping in the sun and snuggling next to the human members of his foster family. He is also known around his household for his special talent—using his paws to drink water from his dish. Riley could be an only cat or will share space with other cats or even with dogs, as long as they are gentle and like cats. A home without small children would be best for this special guy. To meet Riley, contact his foster parent Cathy at cathy@thevbas.org or (213) 453-4679.

  7. Pet of the Week: Lindley

Lindley’s claim to fame is his wonderful natural bobtail that he modestly hides whenever he is relaxing. The handsome Lindley is a 1-year-old former feral kitten. Having been feral it means that he is independent, not cuddly. Lindley thoroughly enjoys the comforts of home but wants managed access to the outdoors. Like most former feral felines, he will do better in a home with at least one other cat. To meet Lindley or for more information about him, call his foster volunteer Anne at (818) 469-3937.

  9. Fifties fun trumps fear of 13

Friggatriskaidekaphobia is the fear of the 13th day of a month falling on a Friday — a day when the superstitious tend to avoid black cats. Well, if black cats were being avoided, Black Cows were being embraced as members, friends and supporters of the Burbank Elks gathered at their Hollywood Way lodge for a 1950s-themed dinner dance on Friday the 13th.

  15. Cat spins a few tales of its own

I have often admired the life of the cat. Imagine, if you will, the luxury of napping in the sun for hours, having your meals served to you two, sometimes three times a day. In addition to all the love and indulgence a human bestows upon you, you can...

  17. For Audrey Kitching, success is so weird

With her trademark cotton-candy pink hair and Harajuku-meets-skater-girl style, 27-year-old model, blogger and fashion designer Audrey Kitching has been turning heads since the mid-2000s, when she emerged as one of the rising crop of Hollywood Internet stars taking the underground by storm. They included androgynous (and even pinker-haired) singer Jeffree Star, hipster photographer Mark "the Cobra Snake" Hunter and club kid and model Cory Kennedy, all of whom were harnessing the Web to build their own DIY brands, growing their fame, page view by page view, via MySpace, Buzznet blogs and emerging social media.

  19. Holy cats

There are those who can't get enough of dogs and those who are obsessed with cats. There are also folks who are both dog and cat admirers. I guess you could say they are bi-petual. We had both dogs and cats when I was growing up on our dairy farm. Our...

  23. Don't eat the cats just yet!

You are probably wondering why I would even make such a statement that's in this column's headline. Before you make any hasty conclusions, let me tell you that I am a cat lover. We have four of the little darlings in our house. When I was actively...
