5. DVD review: 'End of the Road' weirder, more abstract than the book

John Barth surely ranks among the least screen-adaptable modern (or, perhaps, postmodern) American novelists. His stories are about themselves; the words, their own subject. It's not surprising that only one of his books has made it to the big screen. In fact, what's surprising is that any of them did. On the other hand, Michael Winterbottom managed to turn the least-adaptable novel of all time, Laurence Sterne's “Tristram Shandy,” into the terrific 2005 “Cock and Bull Story,” so I suppose nothing's impossible.

  7. DVD review: 'Quadrophenia' gets remixed

The Who released their “Quadrophenia” double album in 1973; six years later, they collaborated with director Franc Roddam (“The Bride,” “The Lords of Discipline”) on a film version — now newly restored and being released on Blu-ray and DVD.

  9. DVD review: An action-packed 'Raid'

It's safe to say that Gareth Huw Evans is the greatest Welsh director of Indonesian action films. Sony Classics picked up his second feature, “The Raid: Redemption,” to the cheers of Asian-action fans. The story is about a SWAT team sent on a suicide mission to grab a crime boss (Ray Sahetaphy) out of the 15-story urban apartment building that serves as his headquarters. When the squad's leader is killed, a rookie (Iko Uwais, who also served as fight choreographer) has to rise to the occasion and lead his guys through 14 video-monitored floors filled with murderous thugs. Story is hardly the point here, however. The film is almost entirely one action scene after another, starting with automatic weapons and then, as circumstances dictate, axes and knives, then improvised weapons, and finally hand-to-hand combat.

  11. DVD review: 'Samurai Trilogy' is a cut above predecessor

In 1954, Japan's Toho studio made three films that achieved enduring international success. The first was Akira Kurosawa's “Seven Samurai,” which shows up within the top 10 of nearly every international critics' poll. The second was “Gojira,” later to be known as “Godzilla,” very likely the best known Japanese film of all time. And the third won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, despite which you're unlikely to have heard of it, unless you're a samurai film buff.

  13. DVD review: 'The 39 Steps' worth taking

Alfred Hitchcock's very free 1935 adaptation of John Buchan's novel was almost certainly the calling card that got him invited to make films in America. As a work of pure entertainment, it out-Hollywoods Hollywood. The plot is that of a thriller. But the tone is more reminiscent of Frank Capra's “It Happened One Night” (which won the previous year's Best Picture Oscar): a series of mostly comic episodes, about a couple, who are on the run by necessity, bristling with hostility, and absolutely destined to fall in love by the end.

  15. DVD review: '21 Jump Street' is 'good dumb'

As I remarked in my review of the theatrical release of “21 Jump Street”, this feature revival/spoof of the ‘80s TV show is better than it has any right to be. It may be dumb, but it's good dumb, mixing very broad shtick with clever sequences that turn around the conventions of the buddy-cop/action/blow-it-all-up genre. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are both hilarious and at times surprisingly touching.

  17. DVD review: 'Cat Run' has some sharp extras

This overly violent but otherwise frequently enjoyable film showed up briefly in theaters more than a year ago, to little notice. It may have suffered from comparison to “Red,” the Bruce Willis/Helen Mirren/Morgan Freeman/John Malkovich action film that opened a few months earlier. The two are similar in type, in a few plot ideas, and through the remarkable resemblance between Janet McTeer's character here and Mirren's in “Red.” The big difference is the budget.

  19. DVD review: 'Hunger Games' a pleasant surprise

Writer/director Gary Ross' adaptation of Suzanne Collins' hugely popular novel — a teen book that crossed over to the adult market — is one of this year's nicest surprises so far. Lionsgate's video release is also a pleasant surprise: They've gotten nearly everything right. There's no commentary track, but that will probably show up on some “super” or “ultimate” edition in the future.
