  1. Small Wonders: Does anyone really care what they think?

There used to be a time when the only people who cared what junk-food companies did were health advocates. How I long for those days. Can we not have our artery-clogging pizzas, breaded chicken filet sandwiches and crème-filled cookies without...

  15. Good news on health costs

The state's new health insurance exchange gave an encouraging preview Thursday of the sweeping effects that the 2010 federal healthcare law will have on consumers next year, announcing lower-than-expected prices for individual policies. Still, the success of the exchange — which goes by the name Covered California — hinges on its ability to attract a large number of uninsured Californians to its policies, and to persuade health plans, doctors and hospitals to hold the line on costs. If it doesn't, Covered California could face a vicious cycle of ever-escalating premiums and dwindling customers.

  21. The case for food stamps

To hear Republicans — and some Democrats — in Congress talk, you'd think food-stamp dollars just disappear into a black hole. The prevailing debate in the Senate and House versions of the farm bill, which contains funding for food stamps (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP), is over how much to cut. But when more than 15% of Americans remain impoverished, slashing food assistance for the poor makes no sense in humanitarian, economic or public health terms.
