DAVE MATTHEWS BAND: Kick Off Tour With Two Distinct Shows

Dave Matthews Band kicked off their Summer 2013 tour this weekend with a pair of vastly different shows in Texas that saw only three songs carried over from Friday's setlist to Saturday's. Those songs were "What Would You Say," "Rooftop" and "Shake Me Like a Monkey."

The opener took place at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, outside Houston and was slightly heavier on songs from DMB's four most recent albums, including four from their latest, Away from the World. The trek moved to the Gexa Energy Pavilion in Dallas Saturday, where 1998's Before These Crowded Streets supplied the most songs, also four.

The tour resumes in Austin, Texas on Tuesday.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, LINKIN PARK: Bennington Joins STP

Stone Temple Pilots made a surprise appearance at KROQ's 21st Annual Weenie Roast Saturday night at in Irvine, California, with a new lead singer, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington.

Neither the band, nor Bennington, was introduced. Instead, they tore into "Vasoline" to begin an eight-song set that also included "Big Bang Baby," "Sex Type Thing," and "Interstate Love Song."

Mid-set, STP debuted "Out of Time," their first single with Bennington on vocals. They've posted a video teaser of the song, along with a link to download the full track, on their Facebook page and official website.

In the announcement noting Bennington's arrival, STP guitarist Dean DeLeo said: "Chester has a one-of-a-kind voice that we've admired for a long time. We know Linkin Park will always be his priority, but we thought it would be cool to try something together. We managed to find the time to record a song and we're all really happy with the result."

Bennington added, "I've loved STP since I was 13 years old and they've had a huge influence on me. When the opportunity came up to do something creative with them, I jumped at the chance. The guys in Linkin Park have been incredibly supportive of me undertaking this project while I've continued to work on new music with LP."

The news may come to a shock to Scott Weiland, the now-former STP frontman who was "terminated" from the band in February, but claimed it couldn't go on without him.

The reconstituted STP was also set to play another radio show Sunday night in San Francisco and May 30th in Los Angeles at the MusiCares MAP Fund Benefit Concert honoring Bennington and skateboard legend Tony Alva.

ERIC CLAPTON: "Layla" Co-Writer Jim Gordon Denied Parole

Jim Gordon, once one of rock's most acclaimed drummers, will remain jailed for at least the next five years. The legendary session man -- and Eric Clapton's co-writer on "Layla" -- stabbed his mother to death 30 years ago, claiming her voice had tormented him for years.

Rolling Stone reports that Gordon, now 67, was denied parole in a hearing held in April. It noted that a state of California panel considered the musician, a diagnosed schizophrenic, "a danger to society if released from prison" -- in part, because he resisted court-ordered medication and counseling. Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Alexis de la Garza told the three-member panel, "This is one of the saddest cases that we have in prison."

Gordon also recorded with The Beach Boys, Carly Simon, The Carpenters and John Lennon. Besides helping write "Layla," he also played the piano part that helps close the landmark song.

ROLLING STONES: Foo Fighting Bitch

Dave Grohl was the eighth special guest on The Rolling Stones50 & Counting tour as he strapped on his guitar and sat in on “Bitch” Saturday night for their second and final show in Anaheim, California.

John Mayer was the surprise guest at the first Anaheim show on Wednesday, following the tour’s first six guests of, in order, Gwen Stefani and Keith Urban in Los Angeles, Tom Waits in Oakland, John Fogerty and Bonnie Raitt in San Jose, and Mayer’s ex-girlfriend, Katy Perry, in Las Vegas. The Stones head back to the Staples Center in Los Angeles Monday night where they started the tour at the beginning of the month.

U2: Do We Need Another Album?

U2 are working on a new album, but Bono says he's not sure the world needs another album from the Irish band. On PBS's Charlie Rose Thursday night, he said, "For sure they don't need it unless it's great."

er the hour-long broadcast, Bono also talked about his humanitarian work, his bandmates, songwriting and the songwriters who influenced him, including Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and John Lennon. And despite his love for Lennon, he's not a fan of John's most famous solo song, "Imagine." Bono explained, "I love so many things about John Lennon, but imagining wasn't one of them. I'm more of a doing. More of an actions. More of a building."

Bono is in New York for his daughter Eve's graduation from NYU on Saturday.

THE WHO: Townshend Hangs With Tommy Again

The Who - Townshend 0517 SC

Pete Townshend made a surprise appearance in Canada this week, taking in a preview of a stage revival of Tommy at the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario. He also joined the cast on stage at the end of the night.

Director Des MacAnuff, who brought Tommy to Broadway 20 years ago, is also behind this production.

Townshend says Tommy still means the same to him now as it did then. "Not a lot has changed. There’s still a sense that the family is in trouble, that the way religion operates is still in trouble, that the celebrity system is still in trouble and that all of these things...well, they’re all the same. There’s a poignancy to that. I think about my generation and think that it’s sad that things were as they were.”

Tommy premieres at the Stratford Festival on May 30th.

BILLY IDOL: With a Google Yell He Gets Ready to Hit the Road

It's a nice day for a...Web developers conference? To help launch Google's new Music Play All Access subscription music service on Wednesday, Billy Idol rocked a roomful of techies at San Francisco's Moscone Center.

Idol's hour-long set included such hits as "Cradle of Love," "Dancing With Myself" and "White Wedding. At one point, he remarked, "It's great to be able to do what you love and get paid for it," an apparent reference to the stellar payday he was about to have. Hopefully, it covered the six costumes he wore during the hour. He also covered The Doors' "L.A. Woman," throwing a bit of The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" into it for good measure, and altering the title to "San Fran Woman" in honor of his benefactors.

Idol and his band, which includes guitar mainstay Steve Stevens, kick off a month-long tour Friday at Pechanga Casino in Temecula, California.

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE: Homme's 40th Ends Epic Week for Band

Frontman Josh Homme's 40th birthday today (Friday) put an exclamation mark on what has been an epic week for Queens of the Stone Age.

Since Monday, they've been rolling out an animated video each day for a different song on their upcoming Like Clockwork album. Consequence of Sound calls the clips -- which have all been created by the British artist Boneface and animator Liam Brazier -- "creepy, nightmarish visuals." They are:

  • “I Appear Missing,”
  • “Keep Your Eyes Peeled,”
  • “Kalopsia,”
  • “If I Had a Tail”
  • “My God Is the Sun” (the album's first single)

Like Clockwork drops on June 4th.

TOM PETTY: Digs Deep for Tour Opener

The show at Evansville's Ford Theater included the Heartbreakers' first-ever performance of The Traveling Wilburys' "Tweeter and the Monkey Man," as well as a rarely played cover of Muddy Waters' "I Just Want to Make Love to You." Other obscurities on the set list included "Louisiana Rain," which they hadn't performed in 24 years, and Petty's version of "So You Want to Be a Rock and Roll Star," which last made it into a set back in 1997.

NEIL YOUNG, BLACK CROWES: Another Day, Another Festival

Neil Young, The Black Crowes and Furthur will headline the inaugural Interlocken Festival -- a four-day event to be held in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia in September.

The festival, scheduled for September 5th through 8th, will be a bit different than most gatherings. It will feature multiple performances from most of the performers -- with no breaks between two-hour sets. The promoters also promise numerous collaborative sets -- such as a teaming of the Zac Brown Band and String Cheese Incident, billed, naturally, as The Zac Brown Incident.

ERIC CLAPTON: In the Blue and Red Too

Teddy M, a U.K. pop artist, has created two large-scale portraits of Eric Clapton -- and when he sells them, he'll donate a significant portion of the proceeds to Clapton's Crossroads rehab center. The portraits -- "Ferrari," which features Clapton's face in red, and "Blue," in which he's blue -- measure a little more than three feet by three feet.

Teddy is a huge Clapton fan, calling Eric his "Obi-Wan Kenobi... I had turned into a teenager and was still coming to terms with the sudden death of my father. While most teenagers were 'bopping' to the latest electronic pop, I was captivated by the guitar-driven sound of Eric Clapton and his album August... It was like being given a light saber -- the force was strong and I had to have a guitar. But not just any guitar, it had to be a black Strat with a red strap."

If you're interested in the portraits, drop an E-mail to Teddy-Art@TeddyM.com. But he's not entertaining offers of less than $7600 each.
